# TT3 Firmware Update

## Updating Your TempoTreadle 3

Every so often we improve the software ("firmware") that runs inside your TempoTreadle box — fixing quirks, extending battery life, adding features. This guide shows you how to get those improvements onto your box.

**First: what version do you have?** Look at the bottom line of the box's screen. It reads something like:

> fw 0.3.3 a1b2c3d 0722-1546

The first number (`0.3.3`) is your firmware version. If we've told you a newer version is available, here's how to update.

### Way 1 — From the TempoWeave app (easiest)

If your TempoWeave app offers a firmware update, this is the way to go — no cables, no computer.

1. Make sure the box is **charged or plugged in**.
2. **Stop weaving first** — finish or stop your session in the app.
3. When the app shows an update is available for your box, tap **Update**.
4. Watch the box's screen: it shows update progress, says "Update complete — restarting," and restarts itself.
5. The app reconnects on its own. Check the box's screen — the bottom line should now show the new version number.

Your Wi-Fi settings, box name, and everything else are kept. If the update doesn't complete, nothing is lost — the box keeps running its old firmware and you can simply try again.

> Don't see an update option in the app? Your app version may not have this feature yet — use Way 2 or Way 3 below.

### Way 2 — Over Wi-Fi from any browser (no cable needed)

The box has its own built-in update page. Any phone, tablet, or computer on the **same Wi-Fi network as the box** can use it — no cable, no special browser.

You'll need a firmware file (ends in `.bin`) — email Barry at **<barry@loftyfiber.com>** and we'll send you one, or a link to download it.

Steps:

1. Make sure the box is **on and charged or plugged in**.
2. Find the box's address: press the **top button** on the box once — the screen shows its network name and an address like `192.168.0.21`.
3. On your phone or computer, open a browser and go to `http://<that address>:8765/update` — for example `http://192.168.0.21:8765/update`.
4. You'll see the **TempoTreadle OTA** page. Choose the firmware file you were sent and start the upload.
5. Wait about 15 seconds. The page reports success, the box restarts, and the bottom line of its screen shows the new version.

Your Wi-Fi settings and box name are kept. If the upload fails partway, the box simply keeps its old firmware — try again.

> If your box runs in its own Wi-Fi mode (no home Wi-Fi), this still works: join the box's `TempoTreadle-…` network first, then use `http://192.168.7.1:8765/update`.

### Way 3 — From a computer with a USB cable (the installer website)

You'll need:

* A computer with **Chrome** or **Edge** (Safari and Firefox won't work)
* A **USB-C data cable** (a charge-only cable won't work — if in doubt, use the cable that came with the box)
* The installer web address and **access code** — email Barry at **<barry@loftyfiber.com>** if you don't have them

Steps:

1. Plug the box into the computer with the USB-C cable.
2. Open the installer page in Chrome or Edge and enter your access code.
3. Click **Connect**, and pick the box from the list that pops up (it's usually labeled "USB JTAG/serial debug unit").
4. Click **Install**.
5. **If it asks about erasing the device, say NO / leave it unchecked** — that keeps your Wi-Fi settings and box name. (Erasing is only for brand-new boxes.)
6. Wait about 30 seconds. The box restarts, plays its logo, and the bottom line of the screen shows the new version.

### If something goes wrong

* **The box doesn't appear in the Connect list** — try a different USB-C cable (many are charge-only), a different USB port, and make sure no other program is using the box.
* **You said yes to erasing by mistake** — no harm done, but the box is back to factory settings: it starts in its own Wi-Fi mode and you'll need to redo the Wi-Fi setup (see "Connecting Your Phone or Tablet").
* **The screen looks stuck during an update** — unplug, plug back in, and try again. The box is hard to brick; worst case it simply keeps its old firmware.
* **Still stuck?** Email Barry at **<barry@loftyfiber.com>** with a photo of the box's screen and the version number from the bottom line.
