Remove Tabby

Found on the Tools Menu

What It Does

Remove Tabby strips out the alternating tabby picks from your treadling, leaving only the pattern picks behind. This is the reverse of Add Tabby — use it to undo a previous tabby insertion, clean up an imported draft, or remove tabby from a specific section of your design.

Remove Tabby

Opening Remove Tabby

  • Ribbon: Design tab > Remove Tabby button

The Remove Tabby Dialog

Remove From

Controls which part of the draft to remove tabby from:

All Picks (default) Removes tabby picks from the entire draft. This starts at pick 2 (assuming pick 1 is a pattern pick and pick 2 is the first tabby) and works through to the last pick.

Pick Range Removes tabby only within a specific range of picks, leaving the rest of the draft unchanged. When selected, two fields appear:

  • From pick — The first pick to start removing from (defaults to 2)

  • To pick — The last pick in the range (defaults to your total pick count)

This is useful when:

  • Removing tabby while leaving hems alone - Strip tabby from just the pattern area of your draft, leaving weft picks intact elsewhere.

  • Changing structure in one section — Remove tabby from a specific area so you can re-do it with different settings

  • Cleaning up part of an imported draft — Some imported files have tabby in sections where you don't want it

Interval

Controls which picks are treated as tabby and removed:

  • Every 2nd pick (default) — Removes every other pick starting from the start position. This is the standard tabby interval — one tabby pick between each pattern pick.

  • Every 3rd pick — Removes every third pick. Use this for structures where tabby occurs less frequently, such as some Summer & Winter treadling sequences.

Preview

As you adjust the settings, a preview line at the bottom of the dialog shows exactly what will happen:

"Will remove 150 picks, leaving 150 picks remaining."

This updates live as you change the range and interval, so you can confirm the result before applying.

How to Use It

Step 1: Set Your Range

Choose All Picks to remove tabby from the entire draft, or Pick Range to target a specific section.

Step 2: Choose the Interval

Select Every 2nd pick for standard tabby removal, or Every 3rd pick if your tabby was inserted at a wider spacing.

Step 3: Check the Preview

Read the preview line to confirm the number of picks that will be removed and how many will remain.

Step 4: Apply

Click Apply. The tabby picks are removed and the remaining pattern picks are compacted together, closing the gaps.

Step-by-Step Example: Removing All Tabby

You have an overshot draft with tabby picks between every pattern pick and you want to remove them all:

  1. Open Remove Tabby from the Design tab

  2. Leave All Picks selected

  3. Leave the interval at Every 2nd pick

  4. Check the preview — it should show roughly half your picks being removed

  5. Click Apply

Your treadling now contains only the pattern picks.

Step-by-Step Example: Removing Tabby from a Specific Range

You added tabby in the pattern area and wanted to remove it to make adjustments to the pattern.

  1. Open Remove Tabby from the Design tab

  2. Select Pick Range

  3. Set From pick: 10 To pick: 200 (covering the area where tabby is to be removed)

  4. Leave the interval at Every 2nd pick

  5. Check the preview to confirm the right number of picks will be removed

  6. Click Apply

The tabby picks in the selected area are removed. The rest of the draft is untouched.

Tips

  • Undo works — Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z) reverts the entire Remove Tabby operation in one step.

  • Start at pick 2 — When removing tabby from the whole draft, the default start of pick 2 assumes pick 1 is your first pattern pick. If your draft starts with a tabby pick instead, change the start to pick 1.

  • Preview first — Always check the preview count before applying. If the number of picks being removed seems wrong, adjust your start position or interval.

  • Works with liftplan — Unlike Add Tabby, Remove Tabby works in both treadle and liftplan modes since it's simply deleting picks.

  • Re-add differently — A common workflow is to remove existing tabby and re-add it with different settings (different treadles, colors, or thickness). Remove first, then use Add Tabby with your new preferences.
