# Project Setup

When starting a new draft, certain values in the Project Setup for that draft are inherited from the Settings that are defined for the TempoWeave Studio application: The Project Setup screen for inherits some values from the Settings menu for TempoWeave: [Settings (app defaults & options)](/help-by-menu-tabs/file-menu/settings-app-defaults-and-options.md). These settings include Default Unit of Measurement and Default Grid Overlay options.

### Shaft and Treadle Options

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/r7TduPwFNdb9RfqEssOG" alt="" width="202"><figcaption><p>Set Shafts and Treadle</p></figcaption></figure></div>

The current WIF shafts and treadles is set on the first tab of the Project Information selection. The number of shafts and treadles initially defaults to the settings under [Settings (app defaults & options)](/help-by-menu-tabs/file-menu/settings-app-defaults-and-options.md)

{% hint style="info" %}
Multi-Treadle - required for drafts requiring more than one treadle to be pressed at a time
{% endhint %}

The Multi-Treadle option, if checked, allows selection of more than one treadle to be pressed on any pick in the weft. For lift plans, this is box is always checked. When weaving with a tie-up, if you don't require pressing more than one treadle at a time (such as with a skeleton tie-up), leave the setting unchecked for easier entry of the treadling sequence as the cursor will advance to the next pick after each number is keyed or selection is clicked.

### Density (Sett)

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/QJmp4eS1Dw4UsMC7lkyO" alt="" width="375"><figcaption><p>Sett and Beat</p></figcaption></figure></div>

The top right box on the Project Setup allows you to select the Sett (ends per inch or ends per centimeter) and Beat (picks per inch or picks per centimeter). These values default to 12. It is recommended that they entered early in the design of any weaving project as these values are used by many features to calculate width and length.

To reset all the thickness markers in a draft, click Reset Yarn Thickness. This will reset all warp and weft ends to the Default Yarn Thickness.

**Calculated EPI / Calculated PPI** Shown (only when used) just below Sett and Beat when at least one section marker carries a local density override (cram-and-dent designs). The calculated values are the weighted average across all threads — project sett applies to threads outside any override, and each override applies to its own section. The Planning tab uses the calculated values for width-in-reed, woven length, and yarn calculations, so a draft with mixed densities plans to its real dimensions rather than to the nominal sett. See Section Markers → Variable Density for how to set overrides.

### Default Yarn Thickness

Under thread density options, the Default yarn thickness is sett. The default for more weaving software is a "4". Also the weaving software standards have the thickness values range from 1 to 16, with 1 being the smallest and 16 being the largest diameter. TempoWeave can use the thickness in the drawdown and view options to have a more realistic rendering of the cloth that has yarns of varying thickness. For more on yarn thickness, see this topic: [Thickness Dots](/special-topics/troubleshooting-tips-and-frequently-asked-questions/thickness-orange-dots-how-to-remove.md)

### Floating Selvedge

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/2hKO09GXTfTWp86ApSuS" alt="" width="351"><figcaption><p>Floating Selvage</p></figcaption></figure></div>

Floating selvedges may be designated by checking the Right and or Left checkbox.  If double floating selvedges are used (meaning two threads instead of one), them Double box may be checked.&#x20;

Floating Selvages impact the quantity of Warp Yarn used in the Project calculations. A think box around the right and/or left threads in the threading indicate that there is a floating selvage. The warp winding plan printout also indicates if there is a floating selvage. For more information, see [Floating Selvedge](/special-topics/floating-selvedge.md)

### Reed Information

<figure><img src="/files/eTCxjphRLVBdUQNZH2a3" alt="" width="347"><figcaption><p>Reed Information</p></figcaption></figure>

The reed information may be defined on the Project Setup screen, or under the Reed Calculator on the Project menu. See [Reed Calculator](/help-by-menu-tabs/project-menu/reed-calculator.md)link for details.

Note that even if designing in Imperial, the selected reed may be Metric (available on the Reed Calculator button) so the appropriate conversions for unit of measure are maintained. The same goes for Designing in Metric and using a reed in dents per inch.

### Raddle Information

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/8uDw6rPb2eRxlMiq6x2D" alt="" width="346"><figcaption><p>Raddle Information</p></figcaption></figure></div>

The Raddle Information may be selected on the Project Setup screen, or under the Reed Calculator on the Project menu. See [Raddle Calculator](/help-by-menu-tabs/project-menu/raddle-calculator.md)link for details.

### Unit of Measure

Set the Unit of Measure as Imperial (inches, yards) or Metric (centimeters, meters) so that measurements throughout the project will reflect the system being used.

### Grid Overlay

Grid Overlays help with viewing the draft on the screen as well as printouts.&#x20;

Grid overlay default settings are maintained in the TempoWeave application setup [Settings (app defaults & options)](/help-by-menu-tabs/file-menu/settings-app-defaults-and-options.md).   These options may be changed and maintained for the project in this Project Setup Grid Overlay setting. Often projects with higher numbers of shafts, or certain treadling or threading patterns will benefit from a different setting. If the boxes are unchecked, grid lines will not appear in the area (drawdown, tie-up, warp or weft).  These grid settings also apply to the printouts, as well as the screens when designing. &#x20;

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="/files/KUNMQXm4azsvZu0YgzOj" alt="" width="348"><figcaption><p>Project Grid Overlay Settings</p></figcaption></figure></div>

The grid lines in the drawdown are thin, and appear thicker in the printouts. The following snipped form a 16-shaft threading printout is shown with the above settings:

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.tempoweave.com/help-by-menu-tabs/project-menu/project-information/project-setup.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
