The Cut feature works on selected threads. For the selection, clicking Cut (or using the keyboard short cut Ctrl+X or ⌘X), cuts out the selected are and collapses the space.
If Shift is held while clicking Cut, the space is left open.
Note - the Delete key (or FN+Delete on a Mac) may be used instead of the Cut function.
