Step 2 - Create the Tie-Up and Interleaved Treadling for the 8-treadle Draft

After performing the Interleave in Step 1, the draft should look like the following.

Next, open a second copy of a file with the treadling sequence. This can use either the original overshot draft (Star-OvershotOriginal.wif) or simply open the Star-Step1.WIF a second time so that it's open in two windows.

With the Star-Step1.WIF in focus, close the Interleave Warp panel if it's still open, and open the Combine Weft panel in the Weft Group on the Design Menu.

In the Combine Weft panel, take the following options:

• Interleave

• Shift Right 4

• Click Apply, then Accept

Notice that there are now 8 treadles, with no tie-up based on the shift right of 4.

The first four treadles will weave the top layer, the second four treadles will weave the bottom layer. By shifting right by 4, and unchecking Wrap, the additional treadles will be automatically added.

The tie-up for the bottom layer will need to be manually entered on treadles 5-8 as shown below. Since the opposite treadle of 3 is 1, the first treadle for the bottom layer will have everything selected except 3. You can see that the tie-up shifts and wraps by one for each subsequent treadle, like a normal twill.

• Treadle 5: Shaft 1,2,4

• Treadle 6: Shafts 1,2,3

• Treadle 7: Shafts 2,3,4

• Treadle 8: Shaft 1,3,4

Usually the warp and weft picks alternate with two colors. The Color Repeats function on the Design menu can quickly perform the recoloring of warp and weft. Select two colors from the palette and add a repeat of 1 through the ending thread. Apply this for both Warp and Weft.

Now your Draft is Ready to weave! You can convert to a lift plan for a table or dobby loom, or weave on a loom with 8 treadles.

If your loom only has 6 treadles, you can do a skeleton tie-up as explained in the next entry. Also, if you want to weave on an 8-shaft loom and spread the heddles across all shafts, remember you can use the Warp Spread function.
